(Writing) Things I can't show my mother.

This time of the year seems when I do a lot of thinking and find some things to regret. This is one of them.

There seems to be a kind of trend where writers are afraid to show their work to their families, most often their mothers. There might be violence in your book or copious amounts of blood. There might be political opinions that differ from those of your parents or your protagonists are hooliganish liberals when your parents are on the more conservative side. There might be sex. There may be guns and swords and religious views that don't line up with what your family believes.

What if my mother sees this? appears to be a question that holds many a writer back from digging deep.

I have that problem in a different but similar way. I'm not worried my mother will read my books (she doesn't know about them and her English isn't good enough. The best she'd do is an attempt at the first page before giving up.) but at the same time I'm sad that I'll never be able to show her what I do and the art I create.

It's not about sex (although she'd frown upon this) or religion or differing political views. The one big thing she'd never understand about my stories is the violence and the realism. Unlike my grandmother, dearly missed, who was a realistic and headstrong person much like myself, my mother is more of the head-in-the-clouds type.

If she read any of my stories, her first question would be:

"But why does it always have to be violence?"

Just like when in my younger years I was still optimistic enough about her to share it was always:

"Why must all the characters be gay?"

There's a reason I don't shy away from violence in my books and think that those stories that have some aspects of it are my best. As much as I hate it and would love to read/write about unicorns and gentle fairies in beautiful forests every day, violence is a part of real life, and if I am writing about real life (which I try to do) then there will be injustices. There will be psychological pain, there will be real pain, and sometimes there will be murder, abuse, and occasionally even darker themes.

Don't get me wrong. It hurts to write those things. It hurt deeply. But in the world we live this represents real life. And that's the reason why I can't show my mother or even tell her about it. My mother lives in her own fairy world. In her opinion, if you ignore violence, it doesn't exist. If you don't think about murder, then murder doesn't happen. If you don't think about blood and someone getting beaten up and worse because of the colour of their skin or their sexual preferences, then racism and homophobia doesn't exist. If you don't talk about injustice, political and otherwise, then injustice will eventually go away.

Mother, this is not reality, but I am too tired of arguing about this any more. I argued about my gay characters too often. I argued about why I drew two boys kissing. I defended why I liked seeing two gay men openly hold hands in Germany (the most progressive place I'd been on holiday back then). These days, no more.

Mother, you are free to think what you please, but that does not mean your opinions are free of consequences. On the contrary, it's the reason why we can't be friends, as much as that hurts me. But I'm not prepared to defend again and again why I must write about things that are real. I'm not prepared to argue with you (again) why it is important to speak about unpleasant things in order to change them in real life. Finding these things out is every person's own responsibility and it's not like I haven't tried. I understand now that some minds resist change or don't want to see it because it's too painful. I find it difficult to respect those minds. I'd prefer to live in a painful world that I can hope to better than to live in a made-up fantasy where nothing bad ever happens if you don't think about.

That is the reason why my mother will never see my work. I'm exhausted and my heart is tired. I can't convince her. And I'll not keep defending myself for trying to improve the world.

Tally time coming up and other Christmas things...

It's almost the end of the year. I'm shortly going to publish the list of what I've read this year (It's pitiful) and my thoughts on it. I'm not extremely happy with how many books I've read, but I am happy I took the time to re-read some favourites and try things I normally wouldn't due to random reading challenges. I'm also happy I spent a lot of the time I didn't read on more important things.

Yesterday, I watched The Age of Adaline, and beyond the main character being boring and not at all the 'remarkable woman' everyone in the film seemed to think she was, it was quite a decent film. At least for the the hour and 45 minutes it lasted I was entertained. (Though a lot of the romance is very cringey...)

Also yesterday, I made a whole turkey, for two people. The breast parts are so dry, they literally stick in your throat, but the rest of the meat, the filling, and the veggies were great. The veggies stuck to the pan and the turkey almost did too. But hey! It was fun and delicious.

I drank some unicorn wine. I got some presents. I gave some presents. All in all, a nice Christmas.

How did you guys celebrate? Put your own festivities in the comments! I'd love to hear about them.

Other news...

I've given up on my Wartales party because of (something like?) ADHD and it being a little bit too difficult on hard mode (uh-oh). I might actually have some sort of ADHD-condition without being diagnosed (yet). It's very difficult to stick to a single task at a time. The older I get, the less I can make myself focus, and difficult tasks especially are quickly dropped. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ What can ya do? I'm just happy to try new things and weed out things that don't work for me (any more).

Playing video games... Wartales! (Early Access)

I recently started playing Wartales (currently in Early Access) and it's extremely fun! Of course, being the masochist I am (just kidding, I actually really, really don't like pain!) I'm playing the game on hard mode. That means I'm reloading... a lot of them time. But the fun of the game (for me) is really in trying to puzzle out tough combat. It's turn based and complex enough it takes me a few tries on most battles (I don't want any of my mercenaries to die). Add to this that I didn't recruit any new mercenaries beyond my starting 4 for a really long time (got to an entire new area with 4) because I couldn't find a female mercenary. Don't laugh. This is very important to me. I'd love to have a group of all girls exploring, being cut-throats, killing guards, refugees, and stealing their way around town. That's just me though. I'm sure some people have a conscience when playing games.

Anyway, point of this: add more female characters to the game. Rotate mercenaries you can hire. (No, I don't want another anger, brute, or warrior. I'd like a spearman or some archers next.) I'd also like to be able to start with more than 1 female character in a group of 4. So far, just trying out different 'new game' loads, I've not managed to get even 2/4 females in about 10 new loads. I think 3 male and 1 female characters is the default, at this point.

Here's to hoping there'll be an option to choose gender of your starting mercenaries in the future!

PS: I did finally find another female mercenary... and then another that I rescued from burning at stake! And after about 40 hours of playing one more. So now my group boasts a total of 7 mercenaries. The ratio is now 4/3. Still looking for that hot spearwoman to join my troop though...

Cheers!

The Future Trajectory of this Blog

The Future of this Blog

I'm sorry to have been absent. I had to re-think the approach of this blog (and I'm not sure I'm done with it!). I've however come to and come to the conclusion that the blog as it was didn't work.  There was nothing of real interest in the there (except the book reviews, which a lot of you liked!), so it has to change track. The new blog will focus a lot more on two specific things: 1.) MY thoughts on writing and 2.) Reviews/Analyses of books

The changes in style mentioned above will be tagged in each post. There will be three primary tags used:

FAQ: This is the 'my thoughts on writing' part. I'll be taking questions writers frequently ask and answer them with my opinion.

Review
: non-fiction and fiction reviews of books I liked and think might be worth your while as well

Update/Current WIP/WIP: This is where everything related to my own stories goes.

This in turn means that there are really only three things this blog will focus on:

1. Writing-related craft questions
2. Book reviews
3. Updates on new stories I plan to publish

I expect the writing craft questions to be published once a week and the book reviews whenever it's relevant. I don't always read good books (unfortunately some turn out to suck after I'm 70% in - Hello Into the Drowning Deep!) and won't waste your time reviewing something useless.

The updates on my own stories as well are not really quantifiable at this point. I have a vague schedule with vague deadlines and that's the system that works best for me - but it also means it's hard to tell when something new will be out UNLESS I'm working on an edit right then and there. (For example: Once I start editing The Torn Planet I can be certain it'll be done in about two weeks. This also means the publishing schedule - taking account as well the time it will take my cover artists to create a cover - will be about fixed.)

As another effect of this re-structuring of the blog I'll also be cutting out a lot of the filler and make this a Busy Bee's Writing Blog (because who the heck has time to read through 2k words of blabla before the blogger gets to the point?). This means I'll stop wasting words just to make the blog post long enough to 'count' (in whatever arbitrary fashion). Instead the posts will be concise and details can always be added later should any of them come up - just like editing any book!

Today we'll start with a post on How you can know if you're good at the writing process. It should be up by day's end so check back here soon or follow me on Twitter (@jasmingelinck) or subscribe to my e-mail list (on the right-side sidebar) to receive direct and immediate updates!

About healthy eating

Hey folks.

A lot of people (like me) struggle with healthy eating (as opposed to just munching any snacks that comes my way). Today's post shall be a list of the healthy foods I substitute these days for unhealthy snacks.

I'll keep it short. These are just my little tricks to eat fewer calories/healthier in general. It might be you find something useful in there for yourself!

candy/popcorn/chips while watching movies/playing video games -> carrot/cucumber sticks+hummus -> currently trying without hummus to save even more calories (and it's yummy! You get used to eating cow food, I promise, and after a while, you even start to crave it rather than the junk you ate before!) In fact, I'm on my way to the cinema in a few minutes, and I'll be taking a box of carrot/cucumber sticks with me instead of the package of popcorn leftover in my snack drawer!

sweets/candy -> apples! (I seriously dislike eating fruit because it's so sticky! You can't easily eat it without having juice all over you, and it's often 'difficult' - I'm lazy, don't judge me - to prepare. Kiwi is impossible to eat on the go unless you go through the lengthy process of skinning it, pears taste meh, apples make my mouth itchy, pineapple comes in cans and is equally as stupid to carry with you as kiwi, grapes... ok, grapes are all right, but I can't eat grapes all day). However, even though apples cause slight allergic reactions, since I've been eating them more (they are cheap, quite easy to prepare into slices, and easy to take with/eat with your hands without getting drops everywhere), the allergies have lessened/I have found species I can eat without a problem, and it works (somewhat)! I like apples. They also help with food circulation in your body!

sweets/candy -> fruit juices WITHOUT sugar! I personally love pineapple juice and pear juice, and I'm sure you can find something you like yourself!

fruit juices -> water! To be honest, I never much was into juices or softdrinks, and always preferred unsweetened tea, but these days I drink a lot more water than anything else, even the 'healthy' fruit juices.

softdrinks -> water. This is kind of a given for me. Soft drinks are sort of a treat I drink once a year, and then only coca cola, because it's tasty! But I find that, having grown up without juice/softdrinks available (my mum is a health fanatic), I don't really need it at all.

PROTIP ON WATER: If it's difficult for you to drink water rather than softdrinks, put the softdrinks away (into your fridge/storage) or don't buy them. Instead, fill a 1L bottle left over from one of those softdrinks with water, and put it on your desk. Make it a HABIT to re-fill that bottle every time you see it's contents are going below 50%. That way, the bottle will be full/nearly full all the time, and readily available at your desk (also put another bottle at other 'sites' in the house you regularly use). That's the only secret there is to drinking more water: to make it readily available everywhere so you can't be 'too lazy' to get it.

sides (rice, noodles, pasta, potato) -> no sides! It a) helps you eat less calories all in all and b) allows you to eat more of the tasty stuff (like meat!)

Your turn! Try to come up with more of these substitutes, or even dispute mine with better ones, and respond to this post with your ideas (come on, do it, don't be lazy!).

Good luck! WriteBot. (Oh, and Merry Christmas, to those who celebrate it!)
